The Â鶹¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ Athletic Department finished in sixth place with 238 total points in the NCAA Division II Learfield Directors' Cup fall sports standings. The Flyers had four of their five fall sports teams reach the NCAA Postseason.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup trophy, commonly known as the all-sports trophy, is presented to the top athletic department in the country each year.
"The Learfield Cup Standings are the ultimate measure of success for our athletic department," Assistant Vice President of Athletics John Ashaolu said. "Finishing the 2023-24 year with a top 20 finish was great, but we aspire for a higher finish in this year's final standings. Our fall sports season got us off to a great start as four of our five teams qualified for NCAA tournament play and we look to continue to build on that success as the year progresses."
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. Overall, 15 sports are counted in the final D-II standings. Seven of those came this fall with women's and men's cross country, women's and men's soccer, women's field hockey, women's volleyball and football.
The next highest (11 max) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings. The men's soccer, women's volleyball, women's cross country and men's cross country programs all made it to NCAA Championships this season.
The men's soccer team qualified for its fourth straight NCAA DII Tournament appearance and 12th overall by receiving the GLVC's automatic bid after winning the conference tournament, advancing on PK's against Maryville in the championship. The team finished in 17th place overall which gave the Flyers 50 points.
The women's volleyball team qualified for its 18th consecutive NCAA DII Tournament appearance, receiving the GLVC's automatic bid after winning the conference tournament with a 3-1 victory against Rockhurst. The Flyers drew the fourth seed and were victorious in its first matchup with a rematch against No. 5 seed Rockhurst 3-2. The program also finished in 17th place which gave Lewis 50 points.
The women's cross country team won its sixth GLVC Championship this season and third in a row, which guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The Flyers recorded a second-place finish at the Midwest Regionals, which helped the program advance to the NCAA National Championships. Lewis placed sixth at Nationals, which was its highest placing since 1997 and gave the Flyers 73.5 points.
The men's cross country team extended their conference lead with their league-best 17th GLVC crown. At the NCAA DII Midwest Regionals the team picked up a second-place finish. Sophomore (Loves Park, Ill./Belvidere North) was the NCAA DII Midwest Region Athlete of the Year after winning the individual title.
The Flyers proceeded with a 12th place finish at the NCAA National Championships which gave Lewis 64.5 points. Horgan recorded a 13th place finish and he was honored with All-American Honors.
Standings published midseason are unofficial. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA's website at .
