Difference between Covaxin Vs Covishield is to be understand by research and education

We know that coronavirus spread worldwide and a big effect on the health of people especially lots of death because of Corona.

There are two vaccines available for Covid that are being used in India right now for emergency trial – Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Serum Institute’s Covishield. Both have some similarities but have many differences also.

Covishield- Manufacture and research Serum Institute, puna

Serum Institute’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin are the two vaccines against COVID19 that have received approval from India’s Drug regulator for restricted emergency use in India.

This shows the eagerness of our scientific community to fulfil the dream of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, at the root of which is care and compassion.”

Dosage Regimen

Both the Covishield vaccine and Covaxin follow a 2-dose vaccination regimen given 28,45 days apart

The first dose given then wait for another 4 to 6 weeks and able to take second dose

Storage of vaccine

Both vaccines do not require sub-zero storage, no reconstitution requirement, and ready to use liquid presentation in multi-dose vials, stable at 2-8 degrees Celsius. to maintain the cold chain during transportation or vaccination.

Mode of Administration

Both the vaccine Covaxin and Covishield are given at intramuscular vaccines(muscles)

Efficacy of vaccine

The world is suffering from pandemics and researchers has the pressure to make vaccine as soon as possible and the Indian pharma team has played a good role and make the vaccine in short time duration.

Pre-clinical studies of Covaxin demonstrated strong immunogenicity and protective efficacy in animal challenge studies conducted in hamsters & non-human primates. Efficacy data in humans are not available, since phase III trials have not wrapped up.

Efficacy data of Covishield, since the vaccine has the advantage of a global arm, shows a satisfactory percentage of 62 percent.

Pricing of vaccine in India

The vaccines are being administered free of cost at government hospitals because the government pay some amount for the vaccine and health centres while Rs 250 will be charged for it at private health facilities who want to take from private hospitals.

latest covishield has declare their price is Rs 600 for private uses.

Age of beneficiaries

Covishield has been approved for people aged 18 years and above, while Covaxin can be given to people aged 12 years and above. There, however, isn’t any assurance if the vaccine can be given to children and pregnant women also.

Type of Vaccine

Covaxin is an inactivated vaccine, which has been prepared on a tried and tested platform of dead viruses.

This vaccine is developed with Whole-Virion Inactivated Vero Cell-derived technology.

Covishield has been prepared using the viral vector platform which is a totally different technology.

vaccine research and developed by

Covishield vaccine is developed by AstraZeneca and the help of the University of Oxford. It is the Indian variant of AZD1222. Covishield vaccine is developed and manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India(SII) through a license from AstraZeneca and Oxford. That is it is a Recombinant Chimpanzee Adenovirus vector vaccine (Covishield), encoding the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) glycoprotein with technology transfer from AstraZeneca/Oxford University.

Covaxin vaccine, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the National Institute of Virology and uses a different platform.

Covaxin is an “inactivated” vaccine that uses the killed SARS-CoV-2 virus and has no potential to infect or replicate once injected and just serves to uplift an immune response. It is expected to target more than just the spike protein. It aims to develop an immune response to the nucleocapsid protein which is the cell of the virus that encloses its genetic material.
